Dave, my brother and I have not had one single problem with our (actually his) PS3 in the years we've had it. I have numerous friends who have one as well and they have reported no problems.
It's a solid unit which is more than I can say for the Xbox which seem to break after a year or so of use.
The Blu Ray player on the PS3 is top notch. If you decide to play online, we can be Playstation Network friends too lol.
